Ingredients
  • Mutton - 1 lb
  • Seeraga Samba Rice - 2 cups
  • Water - 3 Cups
  • Oil - 2 tbsp
  • Homemade Ghee - 2 tbsp
  • Onion - 1 large
  • Green Chillies - 5
  • Ginger Garlic Paste - 2 tblspn
  • Turmeric Powder - 1 tsp
  • Kashmiri Chilli Powder - 1 tblspn
  • Coriander Powder - 2 tsp
  • Pepper Powder - 1 tsp
  • Chopped Coriander Leaves
  • Chopped Mint Leaves
    • For Biryani Spice Powder
  • Cinnamon Sticks
  • Star Anise - 1
  • Marati Mokku - 1
  • Cloves - 5
  • Cardamom - 5
  • Mace -1
  • Black Stone flower / Kalpasi (Dagad Phool)
  • Cumin Seeds - 1 tsp
  • Fennel Seeds - 1 tsp

    Dindigul Thalapakatti Mutton Biryani
    Dindigul Thalappakatti Mutton Biryani is one of the most delicious biryani and its very very easy to make.It has a very unique flavor comes from seeraga samba rice ,that is different from other biryanis .It is very famous biryani in Dindigul and its made with Seeraga Samba rice.Seeraga samba rice is a very aromatic rice and the grain is very tiny in size and it resembles like Seeragam or Jeera (Cumin Seeds ) and it got its name as seeraga Samba Rice.
    The main ingredient for  this biryani is the Biryani spice powder which we ground freshly  that provides the fantastic aroma and flavour to this biryani which adds  extra taste to this biryani.

    Directions

    • Wash Seeraga Samba rice well in water and Soak it in water.
    • Cook Mutton with turmeric powder, Ginger garlic paste, salt and water.Keep it aside
    • In a Blender , Add Cinnamon Sticks , Star Anise , Marati Mokku , Cardamom , Cloves , Mace , Black Stone flower (Dagad Phool) , Cumin Seeds , Fennel Seeds and grind it to a fine Powder. Now Biryani Spice Powder is ready.Keep it aside.

    • In a large Pan, heat Oil and Ghee.Add bay leaves and saute for a min.

    • Add Ginger Garlic paste and fry it until raw smell goes.

    • Add in Onions and green chillies. Saute it well.

    • Add in the Spices turmeric powder, Red chilly Powder , Coriander Powder ,Freshly Ground Biryani Powder, Pepper Powder and Mix Well.

    • Add in Curd and Mix well.

    • Add the Chopped Coriander leaves and Mint Leaves.Mix well.

    • Add the Cooked Mutton Pieces and saute well.Reserve the mutton cooked water (Mutton Soup).

    • Add in Mutton soup (I got 1 Cup Mutton Soup ) along with Water / Coconut milk (2 Cup) i.e.(Total 3 Cups ). For 1 Cup Seeraga Samba rice , 1 1/2 Cup Water.Allow the water to boil.

    • Once the water starts Boiling,Check for Salt and add the seeraga Samba rice and mix well.

    • Cover it with Aluminium foil and tightly close the lid.Cook for 10 minutes in medium heat and 15 minutes in low heat.Turn off the heat and allow it to rest for 10 to 15 mins.

    Notes

    • You can Replace Water with Coconut milk.It add Extra flavor and taste to this Biryani.
    • You can replace mutton with chicken and follow the same recipe.

      Please let me know when you add the rice, is it raw, half cooked or fully cooked. Also when do we add the 3 cups water for the rice & is the rice to be cooked seperately or we add it raw to the mutton.

      I have added Soaked raw rice(not pre cooked ).After adding the mutton pieces,we have to measure and add the water along with the mutton cooked water(soup).
